Man -Externally, he deals with potential bullies at school and outside of school. Internally, Paul deals with his parent’s neglect and emotional abuse. There are both internal and external conflicts in the novel. Imagery appeals to the five senses.ġ1 Tangerine CONFLICT-INTERNAL/EXTERNAL -Internal Conflict: Man vs. The usage of metaphors, allusions, descriptive words and similes amongst other literary forms in order to awaken the readers’ sensory perceptions is referred to as imagery. Imagery helps the reader to visualize more realistically the author’s writings. This characterization is revealed through detail and dialogueġ0 Tangerine IMAGERY In literature, one of the strongest devices is imagery wherein the author uses words and phrases to create “mental images” for the reader. Even though the characters in the novel follow archetypes-the evil villain (Erik), -the neglectful parents, -and the kind mentor (Luis)-most of the characters are quite round. These reoccurring symbols are a key to the novel’s themes. Black is a symbol that represents evil or death.Ĩ Tangerine SYMBOLISM There are many important symbols in the novel.A red rose or red color stands for love or romance. ![]() Generally, it is an object representing another to give it an entirely different meaning that is much deeper and more significant. We also see his thought process as he adjusts to his new surroundings.ħ Tangerine SYMBOLISM Symbolism can take different forms. Because the story is told from Paul’s point of view, we see Paul’s memories from the past slowly return. He is a 7th grader, first at Lake Windsor Middle and then later Tangerine Middle. The book is told from Paul Fisher’s point of view. The last important setting of the novel is the Tomas Cruz Groves.Ħ Tangerine POINT OF VIEW, NARRATIVE VOICE ![]() Tangerine Middle, is a much “rougher” school with older looking facilities and a mostly Hispanic population. ![]() A large portion of the novel also takes place at the two middle schools of Tangerine: Lake Windsor Middle and Tangerine Middle. Paul’s family moves into one of these brand new developments, called Lake Windsor, only to find that the neighborhood isn’t as quaint as it seems. Tangerine THEMES Seeing the Truth/Appearance vs. A minor theme, on the other hand, refers to an idea that appears in a work briefly and gives way to another minor theme.Ĥ Seeing the Truth/Appearance vs. A major theme is an idea that a writer repeats in his work, making it the most significant idea in a literary work. Major and minor themes are two types of themes that appear in literary works. Part 3 resolves Paul’s memory about his eyes, his brother’s criminal behavior, and the lack of communication with his parents. Part 2 focuses on Paul’s move to Tangerine Middle School and his success as a soccer player there. Part 1 of the novel introduces Paul as his family moves to Tangerine, Florida. These journal entries are broken up into three parts. Protagonist is defined as a leading character or hero in the story -Narrates the story through a series of journal entries.
